The project aims to:
The Windmill Community Allotment Project is an inspiring project in Margate, Kent, set up by local groups. Six derelict allotments have been turned into a thriving community allotment project. This has been achieved jointly by volunteers, community service and local schools. The group’s purpose is to promote access to organic, locally grown produce; to encourage healthy eating and provide a beautiful outdoor space where a sense of community prevails. Children and young families are particularly encouraged to get involved and there is a play space for children and plots where people can grow, and share, produce communally. Since the project began in 2005 volunteers have successfully grown a full variety of the traditional rotation crops including onions, potatoes, peas, beans, cabbages amongst many others. Crops have included salads, pumpkins and squashes, raspberries, strawberries, herbs and cut flowers.
The project welcomes visits from, and outreaches to, local community groups. This has resulted in stronger links with the local community, and increased visits to the allotments from local people. The project offers tools, seed, training, refreshments, support and advice to all who come along. There are two part time members of staff on site and the project opens three days a week.
A major knock on effect of the group has been the increased uptake of derelict allotments neighbouring the project. Neighbouring plot holders benefit from the project and may borrow tools, share donated woodchip, timber, and compost and come for support, advice or simply a cup of tea.
